Under the Citizenship Act, individuals with three years of permanent resident status in the preceding four years before submitting their application can qualify for Canadian Citizenship.

Applications can either be submitted at the local citizenship office in their area of residence. Applicants may also submit their applications directly to the Citizenship office in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

Upon the receipt of applicant’s application, the Citizenship office would send a Brochure containing general and some important information about Canada. This is to enable the Applicant acquire knowledge of certain historical values of Canada, its culture and cherished values. Applicants are thereafter scheduled for an informal test/interview with a Citizenship officer to review the merits of the Applicants Application.

If the applicant was successful at this test, applicants may be subsequently required to appear before a Citizenship Judge to be administered Citizenship oath and pledge his or her allegiance to the queen. Though these are subject to the applicant meeting other conditions provided under the Citizenship Act, e.g. background check, residency requirement etc.
